here's how i encountered these delectable sugar coated currants...i had an early celebration for my birthday at chez panisse while on a working vacation in san francisco. eating at this alice waters' restaurant in berkeley is akin to a pilgrimage to good-food-mecca. with a well aged bottle of bordeaux in hand, we walked under the wooden arbor at the restaurant entrance beside ourselves with excitement. i was already blown away with the reasonable pricing for a 4-course prix fix dinner. the food was amazing in everyway. i will eat whatever alice wants me to eat anytime. this was our menu for the dinner:
1. bruschetta with heirloom tomatoes, house-cured pancetta and wild rocket.
2. risotto with saffron and squash blossoms
3. grilled veal loin and calf's liver w/ fried potatoes and green beans.
4. mulberry ice cream profiteros.
just when we felt that things couldn't possibly get any better, this dainty plate of sugar-coated currants and chocolate truffled almonds arrived to push us over the edge to a new level of food-contentment-stupor...
